Starting to get more into the 3d world this year of university firstly using Maya , slowly sliding into blender and so on .
In the first weeks as we started to model a toy car a lot of information was chucked at us in a very short period of time and my brain had to take its time to for it to settle down . Also having all this information coming I wanted to buy few books to help me with my journey and the first two I have got are 3D Art Essentials by Ami Chopine and 3D Animation . And a very first thing that drew my attention while starting to read the 3D Art Essentials one was creating some habits .
First would be referencing . As the book says “ Stop and smell the roses “ Always take time to look arlund you and really see things . Also take the time to record your obervations . Always carry around a small sketchbook. As you begin a project , study what is it you will be modelling or animating . Make reference photographs and sketches and be a good obersvant of anatomy . Keep all your reference labeled and organised . Pull all of these into a one or two page drawing that will be your concept art . And always raise quiestions to yourself regarding what are you creating .
Naming conventions would be the next one . “Before you have cracked open the 3d tools , you’ve already got a lot of assets . As you start creatung this will grow exponentially. You keep track of these all using a naming convention. Name everything clearly and keep those naming conventions throughout the entire project . “ We started doing this as soon as we started working in the first year in Nuke . Always remember to name things otherwise you get lost when working on more complex things .
Third we have save often ( wich I have learned the hard way how important it actually is ) and if the application used has an auto save option don’t hesitate to turn it on .
Next is pace yourself. As you first start to make your plan , schedule how lomg it will take to finish your task and always plan to finish before the deadline so you avoid putting yourself against a wall when a problem shows up and something takes longer .
And last , ask for feedback.
